Where can you buy good Art in Perth?

By Ian Warne

I remember when I first arrived in Perth in the 80's there were small art galleries and shops that supported local artists everywhere, now it seems there are less overall and a few much larger galleries and shops selling lots of  printed reproductions on canvas of local and interstate  artists at  inflated prices for non original works.

There were more charity art shows as well, the army had one at swanbourne barracks each year, quite a few private schools had big shows and Redcross held an annual show in Dalkeith.

However, it seems a resurgence is finally happening in Northbrige lots of old shops are being renovated and some becoming small art galleries. William street is the main street of attention and at present four galleries are now open.
There are two art Auction houses in Perth, with regular auctions every few months, some good old masters from local and interstate artists come up from time to time with estate sales and people down sizing their collections.

Of course the modern way is to to contact an artist directly via a website, quite a lot of artists now have their own website and may be part of group sites. I guess the drawback is that you can only see small pictures of the art and this will always be not as good as looking at the real thing. If you know what you want or know the artists work this is a great way to deal directly with the artist.

My last sales were first from a lady that had bought some of my work from a gallery and wanted another seascape of Rottnest to match the ones she had.
My latest sale was from a father in UK with a daughter in Perth, buying a scene of Perth for her birthday.
