The Slight Edge – The Secret of time and how
it can impact your small business - Chapter 3
The
Slight Edge is a very relevant read for any small business owner. As a
business coach , we use it to give perspective and clarity to our
teaching.
Many
people in the world get the entrepreneurial seizure at least once in
their lives. They want to be their own boss, they have an idea that
will work, they have some savings, they believe that the business will
work, their best friend agrees with them and the bank gives them a loan
on the back of a personal guarantee.
What
many people do not realise when starting a business is that it takes
time to succeed. What happens many people is that they fail to
understand the importance of working on whats important for long enough.
If
you consider a small business at the beginning, its similar to an
airplane taking off. As you start off down the runway, you need full
throttle. Then you take off. At this point in business, many business
owners starting their business begin to relax and guess what happens
– they crash. They have not focussed their business on
gaining momentum and stability because they did not persevere with what
works for long enough - They probably got too busy on things that made
no difference.
Doing
the necessary right things every day over a long period of time will
yield results for you and your business. Doing the wrong things every
day - while not really impacting the business on the first or second
day - will have massive consequences. This could be a. not greeting
customers, not returning calls, not issuing invoices, not making the
required number of sales calls just because you got that one big order.
When
we coach business owners, we try to identify the small things that may
not reflect good practice and we educate the business owner on best
practice. By applying and teaching the best strategies for the business
owner, we gain improvements which we measure on a consistent basis over
time.
Not
understanding that over time, every thing that is done on a consistent
basis will have an effect on the business, can be very detrimental. We
have to be aware, conscious and willing to change. The rewards will
come.
The
average age of a millionaire in the US is 52 and the majority of these
were compiled from small business owners who do the right things every
day over a long period of time.
If
you want to get started online, give yourself time to succeed. People
can be observed suffering from what is commonly referred to a NBT or
Next Big Thing, falling for every sales letter of MLM scheme that they
encounter on the basis of Perfect Life, No Work, Residual Income and
more.
